Childhood is full of ups and downs, and sometimes the low points can impact your little one’s oral health. If your child has suffered a trauma, tooth decay, or has had an accident that affects their primary (baby) teeth, Dr. Berry may recommend a dental crown to restore their tooth to health.
You may wonder why it is so important to treat and protect baby teeth that are going to fall out in the coming years? The answer is because baby teeth maintain space and guide adult teeth into position; they also help children learn to eat solid foods and begin to form words. Keeping these teeth healthy and intact also protects your child’s oral health and development.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a restoration that is designed to cover your child’s entire tooth. Your Beaumont pediatric dentist uses stainless steel crowns for back teeth and zirconia, or all white crowns to restore front teeth. The crown will fit over the remaining tooth structure, which helps to maintain surrounding teeth, hold space, and protect the root of your little one’s tooth.
A crown also provides them with all the function they had with their natural tooth, so eating and chewing the foods they usually enjoy is no problem.
When Does My Child Need a Crown?
There are a few circumstances in which Dr. Berry might recommend a dental crown:
- A tooth that is cracked or fractured
- A tooth that has been affected by a large amount of decay
- To strengthen a tooth that has had pulp therapy
We can treat baby teeth with smaller amounts of decay with dental fillings, so it’s important to be proactive about treatment for your child if Dr. Berry detects tooth decay early on. Completing treatment recommended early may help your child avoid more significant and complex treatment procedures.
What Is the Procedure Like?
The good news is that unlike an adult crown, in most cases, your child’s crown can be completed within one visit. They will be able to leave The Pass Pediatric Dental Group with a fully functioning and beautiful restoration.
If your child is feeling uncomfortable or anxious about their crown procedure, Dr. Berry offers different levels of dental sedation to help them feel more at ease during their procedure.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, can help “take the edge off” so your child feels relaxed during their procedure without interfering with the rest of their daily activities.
General anesthesia may be recommended if your son or daughter needs multiple crowns or a more complicated procedure.

What Our Patients Say
As a child I had a horrible experience with a dentist and that experience has made me terrified of any dental exams or dental work. I did not want my children to ever feel scared of the dentist. It was one of the most important goals for me, as a mom, to find a dentist my kids love. And with PASS pediatric dentistry we did. I have taken my kids to her for over 7 years and they LOVE her and the entire staff. My children look forward to their check ups. Any dental work they need, they are NEVER afraid or worried. The Dr. is so patient and kind. The staff is always happy and interact with kids. Her office is SO inviting and fun. Furthermore, the office is ALWAYS spotlessly clean. Being the “germaphobe” I am, it is super important that I take my kids to a safe clean dentist. PASS pediatric dentistry always sparkles. So blessed to have them for my kids dental needs.Jessica BaconMom of Allie 12 and Ace & Jack 9
